Getting familiar with my road bike. trying to prepare my seat bag with the essentials.?
I have a spare tube, but how do i inflate it? someone said co2, but what exactly is needed? I have heard those little pumps that mount on your bike are worthless.
Things needed: pump of some sort, spare tube, spare folding tire (luxury, but nice), patch kit – instant or standard, an old small pencil with duct tape wrapped around it, a small amount of cash, and a small repair kit. A kit like the Park Tool Roll makes getting most of this easy. See 1st link.
Most pumps work at least the 1st time. I’ve got a 10 year old frame pump that works flawlessly. The difference in price is the quality and durability of the pump. I personally like Blackburn because they have a lifetime warranty on their pumps. The difference between frame pumps and mini/micro pumps is size and ultimate pressure. The smaller it is, the longer it takes to pump up your tire. The larger frame pump also pumps your tire to full pressure. Ultimate pressure also tends to go down with size, but not always. As to ease of pumping to full pressure – quality matters. The better the unit, the easier to pump to full pressure.
CO2: simple, small, effective. You should always bring at least 2 cartridges since if one fails you’ll then have a backup. 2 are also often needed to inflate to full pressure. The disposable cartridges can add up to a significant expense in the long run, so choose wisely. 12gram is typical, 16 gram units are available. And WLE is right, once empty, they’re empty.
Why duct tape and a pencil? The pencil obviously writes. The duct tape can come in handy for an emergency tire patch. It’s not uncommon for a sidewall puncture since it is the lightest part of the tire. Duct tape can patch it and get you home. And I am certain that there are 1001 different uses for duct tape that I’ve never thought of.
Last but not least, a home/apartment floor pump. These are the workhorse units that will actually do most of the inflation that you’ll need. Having a long hose and an accurate gauge help quite a bit.
