How often should I be changing my bar tape?
Hello,
How often should I be changing my bar tape? I went to a store and they want to charge $20 for labor–psssh. I’ve looked up some tutorials, and the general from wrapping from the bottom of the bar to the top looks easy enough, it’s when I get to the shifters that I see that I will have some difficulty. Thanks.
I’m referring to tape that wraps around the handlebars.
Change your tape when you think it needs it or it looks worn. That will depend on how much you ride. I ride 6+ hours per week and the tape I have on now is a year old and in good shape. Yes you start at the bottom with tape and work your way up to shifters. Once there wrap on top of shifter then below alternating back and forth a few times till the bar is covered and tape is tucked neatly under shifter. Your shifter may have rubber boots, if they do lift them up just enough to tuck tape under. Make sure and keep tape taunt as you go. This is an easy task that a bike owner should be able to do. Bike shops are great for some things but knowing the in’s and outs of your own bike is priceless. Do as much work as you can and save your money, even if you fail you will learn something from it. I do not recall the brand of tape, but it comes with gel pads that are placed under the tape. I use this style and it adds a little comfort.
