Lever Hoods

Is there a way to pop the hood of my car if I believe the switch may be broken?
I pulled the lever to pop the hood and all I heard was a click. The hood didn’t release and I can’t raise it. I thought it might be frozen shut, but I don’t see any ice. The car is a 1989 Ford Escort hatchback. I need the hood open because that is how I start the car.
In this weather it is probably frozen. Those hood locks are design NOT to be accessible from the outside (anti – theft). The only thing is to wait for warmer part of the day or try walking around the edges of the hood and knocking it with your fist.
If you have an area heater (space heater) and the car is in something like a garage port, try heating up the hood area. This may take hours. DON’T use hot water to try and melt any frozen ice. That will just make more ice and frozen surface.
If you do get it open, spray the contact (and springs, locks, etc.) with WD40. It will displace any water and keep that area from freezing over again. Actually you might try and spray WD40 into the cracks of the hood. Sometime this trick used on frozen door locks.
