How much voltage does it take to power a white LED?
How much voltage does it take to power a white LED? And what size resistor do I need to convert from 3.0 vDC to that amount? Thanks
Most LEDs have a voltage drop between 2-3 volts. White ones are usually higher, around 3.5 volts.
Since LEDs should be driven via a resistor with at least 2 volts across it (preferably closer to 4 volts) you need at least 6 volts to run a white LED.
The resistor is determined by the voltage spec on the LED, the battery voltage, and current.
So with a 3.5 v LED, a 6 volt battery, and a 20mA current,
R = (6-3.5) / .02 = 125 ohms
PS, you can’t use a 3 volt battery in this case, and resistors cannot increase voltage.
